The Larry C. Oglesby Fund for Summer Field Study in Biology

The Department of Biology offers an annual fund to support Pomona College students in summer research and training in field biology. This fund is provided through a generous gift from late Pomona Professor Emeritus Larry C. Oglesby (shown at right with a student in 1980) and College of Osteopathic Medicine Professor Alice Oglesby. Up to two awards will be made each year, and they may be used during the summer months at any accredited field biology laboratory, whether for marine, estuarine, freshwater, or terrestrial biology, anywhere in the country. Available funds are approximately $3,000 annually, and an award can thus defray a substantial portion of a summer course. Receipt of this award will not adversely affect a student’s financial aid package.

The Oglesby fund may not be used to support work at Pomona-sponsored programs such as Biosphere II or the Colleges-affiliated Study Abroad Programs.

Eligibility: Any Pomona student with a professional interest in biology is eligible. Students majoring in Biology, Environmental Analysis, PPA/Biology or Molecular Biology are all encouraged to apply. Up to two awards will be made per year to any rising junior or senior who has taken Biology 41E. The department will also consider applications from seniors. To be eligible for an award, the student must complete at least one course (taken for credit) in field biology. The remaining work load can include research, but full-time summer research internships do not qualify for support. Program expenses, including travel, room and board, and course fees, are reimbursable to the amount of the award following completion of the program and submission of receipts to the Business Office.

Application: Applications should include:

  1. A description of the field biology program selected and the courses in which you intend to enroll
  2. A 1-page statement describing your interests in field biology, your reasons for selecting the particular program and courses, and your academic preparation for the summer program
  3. A copy of your official Pomona College transcript
  4. The names of two faculty from Biology (or other natural science programs) who can provide letters of recommendation.

Your coursework should be pre-approved for Pomona College credit. Completed applications should be submitted to Dr. Jonathan Wright.

Further Information: The Department of Biology maintains files on summer field biology programs in the Student Lounge and on the departmental bulletin boards. Please consult these, and any of the biology faculty, for more information about summer programs.

Application deadline: Early March each year.
